Leonotis leonurus is a species of plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae. The plant is native to South Africa. It is known for its medicinal properties. Like other plants of the mint family, it also contains the substance marrubiin. The name "wild dagga" indicates its close connection with cannabis. "Daga" derived from the South African Khoikhoi indigenous "dahab" is an indigenous South African name for cannabis species.
The dried flowers of Leonotis leonurus have a mild sedative effect when smoked. Anecdotal reports suggest that the effects observed are vaguely similar to the cannabinoid THC, so they tend to associate it with cannabis flowers.
