Calea Zacatechichi, also known as Mexican dream herb, has been used traditionally to promote dream intensity. For centuries, the herb has been used by indigenous Mexicans for divination and inducing lucid dreams. The Chontal Indians are known to use Calea zacatechichi to receive divinatory messages during dreams. It is considered a healing plant in general and is known by many tribes as the "Leaf of God" for its ability to clear the senses as well as induce visions in sleep.
Its leaf produces a drowsy and relaxed state, which some refer to as a dream, along with a sense of lucidity. One study revealed that C. zacatechichi increased the number of total dreams experienced, the ability to recall dreams experienced, and the intensity of post-sleep hypnagogic imagery. Some reports also suggest that other effects include spontaneous lucid dreaming and increased dream clarity and realism.
It has been used for thousands of years in traditional folk medicine as an appetite stimulant, purgative, sedative, laxative and to treat diarrhoea, dysentery, fever, skin rashes, swollen scalp, "cold stomach" and headache .
