Helichrysum odoratissmum - commonly known as imphepho - is an herb native to Africa. It has been used for centuries by healers for magical and healing healing ceremonies. The indigenous people of South Africa consistently use it as one of the ingredients in shamanic smoking blends to find answers to existential questions, promote ecstatic states and visions, and to recall messages from their ancestors.
In the West, the Khoihkoi of South Africa are known for using Kanna - but they also love Imphepho! They use it to make a tea from its leaves and flowers which they call Buchu. The tea is often made with a combination of different psychoactive plants native to the region, including imphepho, Barosma betulina, Agathosma crenulata and others. Its effects appear to be similar to those of smoking – perhaps less intense but longer lasting.
The effects of Imphepho seem to be more pronounced with smoking the herb than with making a decoction. They are deeply relaxing, bordering on lethargy for some. imphepho is also used for lucid dreaming practices. Interestingly, the functionality of the conscious mind seems to remain intact within a dream background. Dreamlike clarity, beautiful concept!

Use of Imphepho in Africa :
In Africa they apply 3 different methods for Imphepho preparation. The herb can be consumed directly, smoked as one of the ingredients in herbal smoking blends, or used in a decoction.
For immediate consumption, the powder from dry leaves and flowers is being put in a cup with water. The mixture is consumed as it is. Some people place the powder of plant material in capsules for easier consumption.
A teaspoon of dried plant material is also used to make the tea – the tea water is brought to a boil and then the plant material is placed to sit there for 5-10 minutes. The taste of the tea is strongly earthy, so the addition of sweeteners is more than welcome.
Finally, the most effective and widespread method of using Imphepho appears to be smoking the dried herb, either alone or as part of an herbal smoking blend. When the smoke vapors are inhaled directly, the effects seem to be noticeable within minutes.
Imphepho Tincture
1. Place a quantity of herbs in a mason jar. Measure the weight mass of the herb with a precision scale.
2. Cover 50-75% of the volume of the jar with the raw herb.
3. For alcohol tinctures, vodka with an alcohol content of ~40% is usually used. Measure the volume of alcohol with a measuring cup. Cover the plant material completely with vodka.
4. Note the amount of plant material and the amount of alcohol you used. If for example you have used 100 gr. of plant material and 500 ml of alcohol, you create a 1:5 tincture. The smaller the ratio of raw herb to alcohol, the stronger the tincture.
5. Note the date the tincture was created. Close the jar. Shake daily or as often as you can. Leave the mixture in the jar for ~2 months in a dark place. The longer you leave it, the stronger the tincture.
6. After 2+ months, strain the mixture and keep the liquid. This is your tincture.
7. Use 1-2 ml to start. Judge the effects and adjust the dosage accordingly.
Keeping a journal of your contact with an herb is very good practice. This applies to contact with any herb if you intend to cultivate a healthy relationship with it. It's a good idea to note any improvements you notice or any side effects. It will help a lot to mention the time of taking, the amount you take and how you consume it. A precision scale is very useful for accurate calculations.
