Kanna is a "nickname" for the African succulent Sceletium tortuosum. S.tortuosum is botanically classified in the family Mesembryanthemaceae (Aizoaceae). The name "Sceletium" comes from the Latin word sceletus. It is due to the veins of its leaves which acquire skeletal structures when they are dehydrated.
The roots and leaves of Kanna have been consumed by the indigenous people of South Africa for millennia. In this long-suffering country, the dried roots and leaves of Kanna were being used and continue to be consumed to this day. Traditional uses include preparing infusions, chewing, smoking or nasal blowing of the plant parts.
The word "Kanna" is probably due to the fact that S.tortuosum seems to be very similar to cannabis, enhancing the euphoric properties of the latter. The indigenous South Africans also call it Kougoed. Researchers of the plant claim that this name refers to the completion of the traditional preparation of the plant which is as follows: After the plant material is harvested, it is dried and undergoes a fermentation process to increase its psychoactive effects.
Traditionally the plant has been consumed both for its psychoactive effects and for the fact that it seems to enhance indigenous hunting skills. South African tribes such as the San (Bushmen) and the Khoikhoi deeply value and respect the fact that this plant works as an anti-depressant, reducing anxiety and tension. Among other things, it is very important to them for hunting because Kanna is considered a good hunger-fighting/appetite-regulating agent. The Namaqua tribe makes infusions from the plant to fight intense hunger pangs and physical pain.
The Bushmen and the other tribes mentioned above have reported that relatively small amounts of the raw fermented plant material can be chewed or consumed in infusions, bringing about a relaxation of tension and stress, promoting a sense of self-confidence. On the other hand, indigenous people have reported that larger amounts can be euphoric, increasing sensory sensitivity and enhancing libido.
In recent years, several clinical studies seem to confirm what South African tribes have empirically perceived: bioactive substances of S.tortuosum such as mesembrine, mesembranol and others are being studied for depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive/ compulsive disorders, alcohol and substance dependencies.

Traditional & Anecdotal Use :
Kanna is a versatile plant. It can be chewed, it can be placed sublingually , it can be smoked or vaped, it can be used intranasally (sniffing, not recommended with raw herb) and it can even be used for infusions. The sweet spot may be different for each aspiring "kannaseur" and found through different methods. As you can see by checking the product labels and the corresponding Wiki article, the quantitative range is wide.
When raw Kanna is in powder form - see Snuff Cut - it is usually used intranasally or sublingually. Insufflation is not recommended with raw material. For this ROA, extracts are much more suitable. Realistically the best ROA of Kanna Snuff Cut is sublingual use.
When raw Kanna is cut into small pieces - see Smoker's Cut - it is usually used for smoking and vaping or chewing.
In any case, the effects of the raw plant material are stronger when the herb has been fermented. Both forms of raw Kanna are used for decoctions or with other methods such as the ones that were briefly summarized above.
South African natives usually chew it (hence the name kougoed). Sometimes they may smoke it or make hot water infusions. As far as smoking is concerned, the same is true for other South Africans - perhaps this is where the name Kanna comes from, because they tend to combine it with cannabis in cigarettes.
In the US and other parts of the Western World, vaping is more popular. The same is true for the intranasal use of the plant as well as the sublingual use.
Kanna Tincture
- Place a quantity of herbs in a glass jar. Measure the mass of the herb with a precision scale.
- Cover 50-75% of the jar's capacity with the raw herb.
- For alcohol tinctures, most people choose vodka with an alcohol content of ~40%. Measure the volume of alcohol. Cover plant material with vodka.
- Note the amount of plant material and the amount of alcohol you used. If for example you have used 100 gr. of plant material and 500 ml of alcohol, you create a 1:5 tincture. The smaller the ratio of raw herb to alcohol, the stronger the tincture.
- Note down the date of creation of the tincture. Close the jar. Shake every day or as often as you can. Leave the mixture in the jar for ~2 months in dark, cool place. The more the plant material is infused, the stronger the tincture.
- After 2+ months, strain the mixture and keep the liquid. This is your tincture.
- Use 1-2 ml of the tincture for starters. Judge the effects for yourselves and regulate dosage.
Keeping a journal of your contact with an herb is very good practice. This applies to contact with any herb if you intend to cultivate a healthy relationship with it. It's a good idea to note any improvements you notice or any side effects. It will help a lot to mention the time of taking, the amount you take and how you consume it. A precision scale is very useful for accurate calculations.
