Ξεκινήστε τους σπόρους του βοτάνου σε εσωτερικούς χώρους 6 – 8 εβδομάδες πριν από το τέλος της περιόδου παγετού. Χρησιμοποιήστε ένα καλό, αποστειρωμένο μείγμα χώματος που θα προορίζεται για σπορά. Σπέρνετε στην επιφάνεια ή καλύπτετε με μια μικρή στρώση – οι σπόροι θέλουν φως για να βλαστήσουν. Διατηρήστε το έδαφος υγρό αλλά όχι κορεσμένο με νερό μέχρι να βλαστήσουν οι σπόροι. Σε θερμά κλίματα, οι σπόροι του βασιλικού μπορούν να ξεκινήσουν απευθείας σε εξωτερικούς χώρους σε προετοιμασμένα σπορεία.
Ο Άγιος Βασιλικός φτάνει ύψος περίπου 50 εκατοστών παράγοντας πράσινα και κόκκινα φύλλα μαζί με ντελικάτα μοβ βράκτια λουλουδιών από τα μέσα του καλοκαιριού και μετά. Όταν τα φυτά μεγαλώνουν, απαιτείται απόσταση τουλάχιστον 20 εκατοστών μεταξύ τους και απόσταση 50 εκατοστών ανάμεσα στις σειρές τους. Τα στελέχη επιθυμούν πλήρη ήλιο ή μικρή σκίαση και πλούσιο, υγρό χώμα. Η ξηρασία τα εξουθενώνει γρήγορα.
